You log in to check your digital product shop sales — only to see they’ve dipped lower than you thought.
That’s when the panic sets in.
You start running through all the possible scenarios in your head, wondering if this means this is it.
Is it because my products suck?
Is it because I haven’t advertised enough?
Is something broken?!?!
Will my biz go under?!
We’ve all had those moments when we’re looking at slower sales or revenue. We all worry about whether or not sales are just going to keep dropping. But there is a solution if this is what you’re dealing with right now.
And while it’s not always a one-size-fits-all approach, these tips below will help you assess what’s up — and how to move forward confidently!
Pretend it’s December 1st. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are officially donezo and yep…you can probably expect your digital product sales to drop.
Any time you have a big push or big sale, of course, your numbers are going to drop. Why?
Because you aren’t going absolutely HAM like you were before and during the sale (but don’t think that’s the kind of push your shop needs year round. Launch mode is also seasonal because if that’s how business worked, we’d all be wiped out by month three).
Some seasons are notorious for having a slow period. What those seasons are really depends on your business and your niche, but they happen to everyone.
The main thing to remember when this happens is that it often has nothing to do with you as a business owner or your products. That’s just the way the (gluten-free) cookie crumbles.
Cheer up — what goes down must come back up! But first, you have to deal with things being down.
You can’t always control those lulls in business, but what you can do is make a plan of action to still bring in enough income for when they do happen.
If business is going well and your products sell like hotcakes, don’t take a backseat. Build up for when things get slow — allocate your resources (especially money) so you have a reserve of them. You’ll be much less stressed and motivated to keep going when it gets tough.
“Umm…no?”
You sure about that? Sometimes the reason business is slow is because of technical errors that prevent purchases.
While lifelong clients are likely to let you know something is amiss, new peeps don’t know that isn’t how things usually go, and they’re probably not going to come back if they want to shop but the doors aren’t open (or in this case, if the links are broken!).
Do an audit of your website and make sure all your links, pages, and things on the back end are working the way they’re supposed to!
Yes, technical problems do happen, but slow sales usually have more to do with other things, like marketing and business strategy, than a technical faux pas.
This is where it gets so important to look at your analytics tab on your shop admin page (Shopify makes it REALLY easy to check all of this FYI). Are people coming to your shop to see your products and they just aren’t buying? Or are we not getting traffic to our shop at all?
If people are coming to the shop but not buying, look at any other indicators available. Are there certain items with more traffic? Are prices in alignment with one another?
Technical issues and strategy issues are two different problems with two very different solutions!
If you aren’t getting any traffic, this maaaaay be a good time to evaluate your marketing strategy.
Is there something at your disposal that you haven’t been using — like email marketing, social media, or ads? Sounds like a “duh!” I know, but it’s easy to overlook these things when you’re in the thick of it.
Maybe you’ve been on Instagram but haven’t tried TikTok yet. Or maybe you’re only on Facebook but haven’t utilized YouTube or email marketing yet.
I can’t say what works for every business because every business is different, but what I can say is that a multi-faceted marketing strategy is the way to go! Right now, I’m on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, email, and I have a blog, which all works together to help drive traffic to my digital product shop.
This doesn’t have to be what you need to do. Find what works best for you and stay consistent!
Take time to learn about your digital product shop. If you’re ever unsure about what’s happening and why make those analytics your BFF. It may even help you find new ways to put your shop on the map.
And while you may experience slower seasons, remember that you can always bounce back!
If you want to learn about how to drive MORE traffic to your shop with LESS moolah, check out the video below! I’m giving you five of my favorite ways to increase traffic (and yep — without the help of ads! Those things can get pricey.)
