I know you’re ready to push past your competition once and for all, grow your business, and have more time for yourself this year. Just one small problem, though: To do the first two, you probably feel like you have to give up the last one. That’s not true, though.
One of the BEST ways to grow without sacrificing more time is to build a successful digital product shop. That’s why, today, I’m sharing your all-in-one starter guide to creating passive income with digital products.
What if you could push a button and make your life easier? That’s really what you’re offering when you create and sell digital products.
A great digital product provides immediate relief for a common pain in your audience. Your product doesn’t need to be the flashiest or most ambitious solution out there. In fact, the simpler, the better. You want your audience to immediately recognize how this product will make an instant impact on their lives (for the better).
When you need to choose what digital product to sell, you need to find your people first. Research your chosen niche to get all the gritty details; the more specific, the better! Finding the best buyers for your digital product means that the product you design will hit the most sensitive pain points and help you stand out.
You don’t need to solve every problem for your audience, and don’t need to solve the BIGGEST problem, either. You just need to solve a specific problem.
Resist the urge to create a product that helps everyone. This will make your product too broad and less impactful. You want to cultivate a small, passionate fanbase who will be head over heels for your product!
The good news? You don’t need to create the perfect product on the first try! Digital products are a perfect venue to test things as you go and see what your audience responds to the best.
You can do some sleuthing and see what your competitors sell but when in doubt, lean into your own skillset. Your passions can help set you apart from the crowd! Don’t be afraid to look into some inspiration, as well; there are a ton of digital product formats to choose from! Take a look at the 10 best digital downloads that are selling right now, and let the creative juices flow.
One of the biggest mistakes when creating digital products is not creating a strong brand first. Your digital product will be an extension of your brand, so you want to make sure it has a strong foundation. The key to a good digital product shop is to have a strong brand. If you’ve fallen off of the social media wagon for your brand, now is the time to hop back on!
Don’t get me wrong: you don’t need to reinvent the wheel, and you don’t need to shell out a ton of money for content creation. You just need to be consistent AND comfortable in your own voice.
You want to post your product on a digital storefront, and much like brick-and-mortar stores, the real estate matters. Most store owners pick either a custom storefront or a premade storefront.
Not sure where to start? Check out my guide on how to pick the storefront option that is right for you. The answer may surprise you!
What if you could confirm that customers would buy your product BEFORE you made it? That’s what preselling helps you do!
Preselling is one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal when it comes to digital products. The process itself is simple: you post a sneak-peek of the product you are thinking about making, including what’s inside and how it can transform their business or life. Then, give your customers a chance to reserve it before you even finish the creation process! This helps you gauge interest and increase your perceived value at the same time.
If it doesn’t sell, then you know you need to reassess the product itself. However, if you get a good response, you can rest easy knowing that all your hard work will pay off in the end.
Last (but not least), you need to launch your digital product with a BANG! Some customers may be looking for your product specifically, but more often than not, you need to bring it to their attention.
Talk to your audience wherever they usually spend time. Do they prefer Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, email? Will they respond better to a well-produced video, or will they respond best to a quick blurb on social media? Your marketing strategy can start low-key; there’s always an element of trial and error!
