Did you know I was diagnosed with ADHD in early 2020? Well, now ya do.
How’d I find out? Well, it all started with coffee.
After hitting a huge milestone over at The Contract Shop®, I hit a wall. I felt like we’d never see that kind of success again, everyone was gonna ask for a refund, and we’d just fizzle out and everything was just gonna fall apart.
Fun, right? Well, I decided to do the right thing for me and go see a therapist — with a big ol’ mug of coffee in hand. She immediately asked how much coffee I drank in a day and, it turns out, drinking a whole buncha strong percolator coffee and having racing thoughts and anxious behaviors kinda go hand-in-hand. Go figure.
But during our next few sessions together, the therapist had a hunch that I was exhibiting some attention deficit challenges, and even some obsessive-compulsive behaviors. She referred to me a psychiatrist, who went through his own medical process of reviewing my case and arriving at a diagnosis.
As it turned out: I was a 31-year-old woman with a thriving business, a law degree, and… ADHD.
I won’t go into the full details of my own diagnosis or symptoms, because I don’t want anyone diagnosing themselves just from this blog alone. The biggest thing: That diagnosis changed my life. And my business. And my relationships. The whole enchilada.
I learned that always running late was something I could work on — what?! I found tools I need in my life and business to help me be successful. I discovered that the way my brain works isn’t necessarily something wrong with me. It’s just different. I learned a lot simply by asking for help.
Today, I’m in a much healthier place mentally, physically, professionally, and within my relationships. Over the last year, I’ve also learned that everyone’s journey is different.
There are so many stereotypes about what ADHD is — and I want to help break those down.
Owning my own business has helped me thrive with my differences, and it allowed me to turn all my thoughts and “wild ideas” into products and services that actually fulfill me and support my lifestyle.
Plus, now that I have more awareness around how my brain works and what I need, I’ve grown even more.
I just want to remind you that, no matter what you think your “differences” or challenges are, it’s OK to get help. It’s OK to build a business or a lifestyle that works for you. And you’re your own boss. Don’t forget it!
