I’m betting you hear “passive income” and “make money in your sleep” literally all the time as a client- or service-based business. And you’re probably thinking you never want to hear those phrases again — especially if you’ve tried it and felt like all you got was a metric crap-ton more work (while you were already drowning in client ish).
This is why I have such a problem with the passive income industry. Because, most of the time, it’s all about showing you how to create a new audience, a new product, and a new business model — rather than building on what you’ve already got.
I have such a problem with that, that I coined a new term for a new option: dCommerce™.
Well, dCommerce™ is the online creation and sale of digital download products. Kinda like how eCommerce is the online sale of products, but with a twist. (I know, I’m pretty cool, right?)
dCommerce™ is all about finding the products that boost sales for your business and create new streams of (actually passive) income, so you can work less with the clients you hate, work more with the clients you love, and grow your biz without working 72 hours a week.
If you’re thinking, “Hey that sounds pretty cool… but how would I even get started?” — or you immediately go to, “Uhhhh that sounds like a lot of work and I’ve got enough on my plate” — I’m sharing my #1 tip to make getting started EASY below.
When I say that you should pick one thing to focus on when you decide dCommerce™ is the way to go… I mean it. And this is coming from someone with ADHD, so you know it’s serious. Why am I so serious about this?
Because focusing on one digital product and choosing to do it well results in much less overwhelm for you AND your potential client. Not only will you be able to hone in on your first offer and actually create it much faster, but it will be so much easier to show your clients or audience why they need it.
This is the biggest downfall I’ve seen for other digital product creators: They want to make an entire shop or library of paid resources, so they pump stuff out super quickly and then offer all of it to their audience. Not only did they just burn themselves out churning out all those digital products, but now they’re not selling anything because… well… their audience is overwhelmed!
Have I made the point clear enough yet? Good. OK, so now, what does this mean for you? It means you need to get crystal clear on what your audience or clients need from you, so that you can create it!
Now that you know you need to focus on ONE thing to get started, let’s figure out what that one thing is. Usually, this is something that people come to you for all the time, or that you get asked a ton. (I have a ton of ideas for what sort of digital download products you can create in my free Ultimate Product Creation Plan, but I’ll talk more about that in a bit.)
The key is making sure that you’re creating a digital download product that people (your current clients or people in your network or audience) know they need, or that you can quickly show them that they need. If people don’t know what the solution is, they don’t realize they have that problem, or they feel overwhelmed by the solution, you aren’t going to sell anything. This happens a lot with courses and e-books or other resources that go SUPER in-depth, but don’t solve the specific need in a faster and easier way. We don’t want that for you.
So get specific. What can you create that’s simple, straightforward, obvious, and easy? It needs to accomplish some small easy win that builds your authority, gets your customer excited, and can even build a relationship between you and them — if you want to potentially sell them a higher-priced product or service in the future.
For example, at The Contract Shop®, we focus solely on the meat-and-potatoes of different types of contracts. You get all the elements you need for your contract based on different types of services or businesses, and it’s super easy for people to customize their contracts and start using them. Everyone understands what we’re selling; it’s super clear, they see the value, and they get what they need. Once they purchase, they can go along their merry way with the solution. If they want to come back for our other offers, that’s great, but it’s not critical. See? Easy.
