Coming up with the perfect digital product shop name can be tough, and even though our guy Shakespeare made quite the deal out of names, they aren’t everything, especially in business.
Yes, there are definitely things you want to consider before throwing out a name for your shop, but you don’t need to spend countless hours and sleepless nights obsessing over the best digital product shop name.
But with that being said, how do you come up with a good name? Keep reading because I’m giving you my best tips for figuring that out (plus a few pointers on getting that ishh legally protected — no one likes a copycat.)
Just like when parents name their kiddos, I imagine the pressure is ON to find the perf name for your (business) baby.
What if they don’t look like a Jennifer? Should they have a hyphenated name? Should the name have any significance??
Relax — just like with people, your shop will grow into whatever name you give it.
And also just like people, it’s about what’s on the inside that counts, not the name itself. Having a good name for your shop is important, sure, but it isn’t everything. Keep your focus on making it a good shop (and you can always change the name later!).
Let’s take an editorial spin on this. An author writing a children’s book probably isn’t going to name the big scary monster that has a heart-to-heart and becomes a hero at the end, something like Chester. They’re probably going to give it some quirky name like “The Big Scary Monster” because that’s what will stick with their audience.
In the same way, you’ve got to consider your niche and the brand you’ve built around it. If you’re a little bit edgy, something like The SOP Shoppe may not stick. Names aren’t the be-all-end-all, but they do carry some weight.
Try to name your shop something that will resonate with your target audience and stick with them. Making an impression is key!
One of the easiest ways to strike up inspiration for a shop name is the name around the result you give your customers, like, The Thriving Therapist Shop. It gives your audience a heads-up about what they can expect and spells it out pretty clearly for prospective customers.
And an added bonus — it’ll make it much easier on you during the trademarking process. The USPTO is more likely to accept a name that’s distinguishable, unique, and also easy to remember.
Why is it important to get your business name trademarked? Well, simply put — you don’t want someone else copying your work. Trademarks legally protect your biz from copycats.
If you don’t trademark, and someone decides to take the (unprotected) name you had, there’s really not much you can do about it.
And likely, you’ll have to do some rebranding recon so you aren’t confused for one another. Which is pricey, time-consuming, and just downright disappointing! No one wants to kiss their hard work goodbye.
I definitely don’t recommend trying to DIY your trademark. It can be a pretty tedious process and can take several months to complete. DIY trademarking services often don’t have thorough searches to ensure your name hasn’t already been taken.
If you cut corners this way, you may have to spend more time finishing the process because of the back and forth between submitting an application, getting rejected, and trying again. Oh, and, all of this costs money too! So, it’s better to do it right the first time.
It’s hard to get turned down for trademark approval if it’s your legit name — unless you have a super common name or somehow it’s already been trademarked. Then you’ll have to muster up a little more creativity, but I always suggest starting with or choosing your name if you’re having a hard time coming up with something else for your digital product shop.
Okay, so, you’ve got a name for your shop. Time to launch right? Alright…hold your horses. You’ll need a lot more than that to set up your shop and get your products selling like hotcakes. Sounds like a load though, amirite??
Google may be a modern-day miracle, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are about 500 different ways to go about doing things. Searching for answers can be draining because you don’t always find what you’re looking for.
But I’ve got just the thing to make it a bit easier! I’ve bundled up all the whys and hows of setting up and launching your digital product shop into one easy-to-follow course, Launch Your Shop Academy®!
