If you’re trying to grow your digital product shop or turn your services into digital downloads, you have a lot on your mind. You might still be working with clients, or working a full-time job, while you scale your way to knocking this biz thing outta the park.
Plus, if you work from home or work on your digital shop late at night (and you’re, like, um, surviving a pandemic), that chaotic pace affects your workspace.
You like that little rhyme I just made? Me, too.
Working so hard on your business and trying to manage everything in your life leads to overwhelm, stress, and even feeling like you can never make progress on anything. Pretty soon, you look up and your house is a mess, you haven’t showered (just me?), and you have a million thoughts bouncing around your head.
Hold up. Your business and goals for your shop or digital products don’t have to feel that chaotic. You can find a little zen in your day, and still manage to kick butt and grow a business that works like an ATM.
How? Well, let’s talk about a few of the calm business strategies I use everyday, even after scaling my shop to 7+ figures.
Disclaimer: These are the things that work for me. They may not work for you, but I do encourage you to try them. As a business owner who also has ADHD, these tools have helped me stay focused, reduce anxiety, and feel more in control when business-building feels like “a lot.” Try them out or don’t, but it’s worth hearing.
I clean off my desk at the end of every workday, or night if I’m working late. Even if that means leaving a pile of notebooks or whatever else I used that day, the majority of my workspace is clean, and it’s a fresh slate for the next day.
Most importantly, I remove the tea cups and snack wrappers that accumulate over the course of my day, so I have that under control before I come back to work tomorrow.
Even if you don’t have a traditional desk set up, you can use this tactic, too.
Choose 2 surfaces to declutter or tidy up every day. When you’ve been so focused on work, it’s annoying to finally look up — only to see that the kitchen is chaos or your bedroom looks like a tornado went off in it.
Take 10 minutes to tidy up 2 spaces, whether it’s the kitchen counter, the dining table where you work, your bed, or even the living room floor where your kids dump all their toys. This simple act can help you feel more in control, and create more mental space for the work you’re doing.
Don’t worry, I’m not talking about Instagram-worthy journaling, nor journaling for hours on end. Nobody has time for that, and I don’t really think there are benefits to doing it — every day at least.
Instead, I take 10 minutes to jot down just a line or two about the day, what I’m thinking, and then I’m done. It’s easy, it makes me stop looking at a computer, and I have something to look back at and laugh about (or pat myself on the back for).
You can implement this practice into YOUR life, too.
Journaling also helps you feel in control. You can control 10 minutes to journal. Plus, it helps you fill your bucket a little bit. You’ll know you have 10 minutes of you time every day, so why not give yourself that?
Journal in the morning or night for just 10 minutes for a week (or a month, but I don’t want to scare you off). Why? Because it’s important for you to memorialize your progress — you can look back and see what happened, the struggles you faced, and the problems you’ve solved.
This is my biggest tip — and probably a huge part of why I was able to see the growth that I did without getting distracted (or crying more). Here it is: Only follow 1 or 2 people you consider your mentor.
If you talk to top people in their industries, they know that really finding a mentor (even someone they just learn from online and never interact with) is key to success. However, they don’t just follow everyone that’s known in their space. They limit their intake, and cut down on all the noise.
Think about it: How many people do you follow on Instagram right now, or listen to their podcasts religiously, and try to implement the tips they share? If you were to follow them all, and their advice to the T, you’d have tons of different directions — and all of them counteract each other.
It doesn’t mean certain mentors or big names in your industry are wrong. It’s just that it’s more noise in your head. So be intentional with who you choose.
I also recommend having a good blend of mentors: Don’t focus on two business coaches who help you get more leads. Choose a mindset coach or a different type of mentor, and then one business coach who can help you get more leads.
Personally, I like to choose new mentors at the start of the year, but I always give myself the chance to “swap them out” if one is just not working well for me.
I follow everything these two people put out — podcasts, Instagram Lives, etc. I am essentially their biggest fan girl. Doing so allows me to consistently follow what they recommend, and I can see the results from their actual strategies, because I’m not trying 84 other things from 10 other people.
You can totally listen to other podcasts or read books outside of these two, but really focus on these two mentors or coaches. It can be challenging, especially if there’s a “Hot Coach” in your industry — we all know those, right?
A last note: If you find a mentor you love following, and their advice has served you well, invest in them. Buy their courses, join their group coaching programs, or even think about taking advantage of their 1:1 offers. Every time I have invested in a mentor who was the right fit for me, I grew by leaps and bounds.
While all three of these tips are hugely important, I think Tip #3 is a gamechanger — and something I credit to my own personal and professional growth without crying all the time.
But of course, now it’s time for you to go out and implement these three things if you want. I think that means I’m one of your mentors??!
